Description

The Oosterweel Link, part of the TEN Amsterdam–Paris motorway, will complete the northern section of the Antwerp ring road. This project is one of the main components of the Master Plan developed by the Flemish Government, aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the Antwerp region.

The most significant transformation resulting from the Oosterweel Link will take place in the northern part of the city. The well-known Antwerp ring road (R1) will undergo a major redevelopment. The Merksem viaduct will be demolished and replaced by a redesigned ring road, partially covered and located below ground level, including the construction of a tunnel.

The conversion of a viaduct into a ring road integrated with green and park areas represents a major infrastructure undertaking. In order to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow during construction, a temporary bypass or motorway will be built. This bypass will serve as an alternative route to the current ring road, diverting traffic away from the districts of Deurne and Merksem during the construction works.

At the same time, the bypass will ensure a safe and predictable traffic environment. The diversion will be located on the eastern side of the current ring road, along the Sportpaleis, starting at the R1/E313 interchange (Antwerp-East) and ending at the E19/A12 interchange (Antwerp-North), near the Jozef Masurebrug bridge in Merksem.

The scope of work awarded to ConstruGomes includes the installation of formwork, reinforcement works and concrete casting for the following structural elements: foundations, piers, T-beams, transverse beams between precast girders and top slabs.
