The Heumar motorway junction connects the A3 (Oberhausen - Frankfurt am Main), A4 (Aachen - Olpe), and A59 (Oberhausen - Bonn) motorways and forms part of the Cologne ring road. Since 1941, it has provided the connection between the A3 and A4 motorways, while the A59 was added in 1982, transforming Heumar into a major motorway interchange with partially restricted traffic flows.
With its numerous bridges and multi-level traffic circulation, the Heumar motorway junction represents a highly complex intersection, also crossing several secondary roads and railway lines.
Due to this complexity and the fact that some bridges have already reached the end of their service life, the reconstruction will be carried out in two subprojects. The first subproject includes the replacement of the structures requiring the most urgent intervention. These include the B8 overpass, the access ramp to the A4 motorway, and the structures crossing the KVB railway line along the A3/A4 motorways.
